Erasmus + Policy Statement

International (EU and non EU) strategy

City Unity College (CUCN) is an English speaking College established in 2013, offering variety of Diploma, bachelor and master degree programmes, such as Retail & Merchandising Management, Hospitality & Tourism Animation. In order to enhance the diversity of its students and faculty and as a means to promote high academic standards, CUCN cooperates with Cardiff Metropolitan University (CMU) under franchise agreement, and offers a wide variety of programmes such as: 3-years’ Bachelor degrees in Accounting & Finance, Business and Management Studies, Psychology and Computing, and master degrees in Business Administration, International Hospitality & Tourism Management, LLM and Health Psychology.

CUCN’s mission is to provide modern academic programs that are results-oriented and that focus on the student’s needs, so that every graduate may aspire to become a competent and qualified professional, in today’s rapidly changing environment.

Our main directions of studies are International Hospitality & Tourism Management and Business Administration. Our aim is to establish strong international cooperation in all these fields of studies.

CUCN recruits students from over 10 countries and hires academic and administrative staff from over 5 countries. The majority of CUCN’s students come from countries outside Cyprus. As an international College, CUCN offers educational opportunities for students from all around Europe and brings them together with students from other parts of the world. Dual accreditation and flexible degree structure provides an opportunity for students with highly diverse educational backgrounds to participate in graduate education that answers to the best academic standards.

Development of double and joint degree programs is an important part of our International activities. Our priority is to develop a joint/double degree Bachelor program in International Hospitality & Tourism Management/ or Business Administration within a partnership, which includes partners from EU countries.

By participating in the ERASMUS+ Programme we are planning to modernize our institution in accordance with Europe 2020 strategy. CUCN is planning to organize and implement international cooperation projects within the framework of Erasmus Plus Programme (Key action 1, key action 2, key action 3, Jean Monet and Sports).

Our institution has a holistic international strategy which sets forth a series of steps to enable the College to reinforce and expand the international reputation in all its endeavors, including being recognized as an international leader in high quality learning, teaching, research and enterprise. The international strategy covers both EU and NON- EU countries. These aims are all facilitated and delivered through a range of approaches including:

  1. The development of key sustainable partnerships with comparable universities globally, especially in Europe.
  2. Student and staff mobility within Europe, using Erasmus where possible, and outside of Europe using inter-institutional agreements and Memoranda of Understanding.
  3. Opportunities for students to engage in a professional training year with both national and international employers especially in the SME sector.

Cyprus has an ECTS compatible credit system, which allows making the process of recognition easy.

Receiving visiting lecturers (including under Erasmus) adds to the international character of our education. Opportunities provided to our own academics to visit universities around and outside Europe directly lead to enhanced cooperation in joint teaching programs and multi-lateral research activities. CUCN’s administrative staff also benefits from international cooperation activities. We see the huge importance of cooperating with partners from outside of EU, in order to attract more students and researchers into the EU education market we need to stimulate staff exchange with non-EU countries.

CUCN enthusiastically supports the European modernization and internationalization agenda. It embraced the Bologna Process from the very beginning.

So far we are on the way to cooperation  with institutions and companies not only in Cyprus, but also from various EU countries. We are planning to continue and enhance the existing cooperation, as well as to search for new opportunities.

Strategy for implementation

Within its core area, CUCN will create strategic partnerships through cooperation with other higher education institutions and key stake holders, such as organizations, authorities and enterprises.

Within some selected areas, we will create knowledge alliances with enterprises promoting creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship by offering relevant learning opportunities.

CUCN aims at joining capacity building projects with other institutions within the Programme and Partner countries.

  • In addition to special measures for disadvantaged students, such as language support and adapted education to students with special needs

Improving the quality and relevance of studies and research:

  • Have a close relationship with enterprises, so to give the students and the teachers skills and possibility to become employable and attractive candidates.
  • Make it possible for different groups of the population to study at CUCN through online courses and e-learning, modular courses, distance courses and part-time courses.
  • CUCN will apply for its own PhD program.

Strengthening quality through mobility and cross-border co-operation:

  • Through a focus on attracting the best within their subject areas and employing renowned professors, ensuring that CUCN keeps a high standard.
  • Fostering research collaboration/clusters with the best within some research areas and attracting the best students to participate.
  • Systematically build mobility into all CUCN degree programs and increase numbers in mobility.

Study period abroad can last from a minimum of 3 months (or 1 academic term or trimester) to a maximum of 12 months. The exchange within Erasmus+ programme can be made multiple times, but may not exceed 12 months within one cycle of study.

Participants receive a grant to help offset the mobility costs of training in another country, such as travel, language preparation and differences in the cost of living.

The Traineeship may be realized while being a student or being a recent graduate, within a maximum of one year after the graduation.

City Unity College recognizes and transfers the courses taken by students at Erasmus+ Mobility.

The courses undertaken by the student should fulfill the objectives of the learning agreement of the sending and receiving Institution. The administration and the Academic Director’s office expect our education partners to provide the transcript of records or a Diploma Supplement (DS). The Academic Director’s office reviews the transcripts and counts the ECTS earned towards a student’s degree programme.

City Unity College follows an official procedure for the evaluation, preparation and submission of a student’s transcripts or diploma supplement.

Studies

By the end of mobility student is provided with the semester record sheet by the administration of the Institution, which is made through Europass. Record sheet represents final grades of students taken. The calculation of a final grade is based on class attendance, participation in a discussion, assignments or projects and test grades (mid-terms/finals). The institution is using GPA grading system, where a grade ‘A’ is worth 4 points, a grade B 3 points, a grade of C 2 points and a grade of D 1 point.

Institution follows a method when evaluating and recognizing credits earned during work placement. City Unity College, the work provider and the student sign the Learning agreement which includes: details about the sending and receiving institution, total of working period, working hours per week, objectives of the traineeship, outcomes of the traineeship and a written task produced by the student. The student is asked to prepare a Learning agreement, where s/he needs to include the learning experience, objectives and outcomes of the traineeship.
